Painting exhibition showcases country’s rich maritime traditions

Ras Al Khaimah, Oct 8: Sheikh Ahmed bin Saud Al Qasimi, Chairman of Al Rams Sports Club, opened a painting exhibition showcasing the works of artist Obaid Suroor and others at the Manar Mall here last evening.

The exhibition is themed on UAE’s inextricable links to the sea and the country’s long standing cultural traditions related to the sea. The oil paintings on display attempt to capture the manifold and overarching presence of the sea in shaping the culture and traditions of the land. 

The exhibition also has on display a collection on handicrafts made of sea shells and pearl replicas mounted on antique wood pieces.

“The works are meant to be an artistic tribute to the rich traditions of UAE and its cherished links to the sea which in the past provided livelihood by way of fishing and pearling,” Obaid Suroor said. He said that the artworks were made using antique wood sourced from old houses in Al Jazeerah Al Hamra to endow them with a real touch of the past.

Sheikh Fahim bin Abdullah Al Qasimi and a number of officials were present at the function. The exhibition will last till October 16.
