UAE, October 4, 2009: H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, today inaugurated the state-of-the-art RAKMedical & HealthSciencesUniversity (RAK MHSU) building.
H.H Sheikh Saud cut the ribbon in the august presence of Syed M. Salahuddin, Managing Director, ETA Ascon Star Group & Member, Board of Trustees - RAK MHSU & Essa Al Ghurair, Director, Al Ghurair Investments & Member, Board of Trustees - RAK MHSU, dignitaries, media persons and other stakeholders.
In his inaugural address, H.H. Sheikh Saud who is also the Chancellor of the University, said: “It gives me immense pleasure to open the gates of knowledge to one and all. With our efforts we intend to make UAE and Ras Al Khaimah in particular, a preferred destination for higher education. It is only through such efforts that our future generations will become more powerful and learned and benefit in the long run. Ras Al Khaimah has always been at the forefront of pioneering efforts that will take our great country towards a truly knowledge-driven economy.”
"The Government of Ras Al Khaimah believes that education is the most important vehicle for all of us to create the kind of future that we seek and to empower our new generation with the skills and knowledge that they need to live in the constantly evolving world of today," Sheikh Saud said. He added that Ras Al Khaimah, with its numerous educational initiatives, aims to be a place where people can find all their needs for education and can be a source for development and progress for the country.
The land for RAK MHSU building has been granted by the Government of Ras Al Khaimah. This permanent campus offers excellent academic environment for faculty and students alike, including a well-equipped library, lecture halls, clinical skills laboratories and multi-purpose laboratories in addition to the gym and other student facilities including cafeteria.
RAK MHSU has been established by the RAK Human Development Foundation under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi. Syed M.Salahuddin, Managing Director, ETA Ascon Star Group and Essa Al Ghurair, Director, Al Ghurair Investments, are the partners in this venture.
Commenting on the occasion, Syed M.Salahuddin said: “ETA Ascon Star Group shares the vision of H.H. Sheikh Saud and that is primarily the reason of becoming a partner in this wonderful endeavor. We would like to see this university create success at the regional and international level. In line with H.H. Sheikh Saud’s vision, RAK MHSU is talking to different international universities to collaborate. With the new building in place, RAK MHSU has opened a new chapter in a very short span of time.”
Commenting on the occasion Essa Al Ghurair said: “Amongst our various investments, RAK MHSU remains one of the most pertinent ones owing to H.H. Sheikh Saud’s vision for the university. Within a very short span of time we have managed to create a world-class university right at the doorsteps of Middle East. The university has well qualified 70 full-time faculties hailing from 15 different countries. And there are 300 students that have converged from 30 countries. I think our strategy to have four distinct colleges right from day-one has paid off.”
Post inauguration, H.H Sheikh Saud took a tour of the campus leading to the auditorium where National Anthem was sung with utmost patriotism. Mr. M Riazuddin, Director Finance and Accounts, RAK MHSU gave a welcome address followed by Vice Chancellor Dr. S Gurumadva Rao’s address.
RAK MHSU commenced operations from September 2006 with a vision to be the leading medical and health sciences university and is in the process of fulfilling the regional requirements for a high quality medical and health science education not only in UAE, but also in the entire Middle East Region.
At present, the university has 4 constituent colleges – RAK College of Medical Sciences, RAK College of Dental Sciences, RAK College of Pharmaceutical Sciences and RAK College of Nursing. All the programs are accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Government of UAE. Clinical training and internship is offered in Government Hospitals based on the agreement between the Ministry of Health, U.A.E and RAK MHSU.
As a part of the learning strategy, students are given ample opportunities to participate in different learning sessions, such as, problem based learning, small group discussions and case base learning, in addition to seminars and didactics lectures. The clinical training is being undertaken in two of the Federal Hospitals of Ras Al Khaimah namely, SheikhSaqrHospital and ObaidullahHospital in addition to the different primary health care centers. Both the hospitals have more than 450 patient beds in addition to having all the facilities for the patient care. Besides, there are 40 adjunct clinical faculties who are working as consultants in the teaching hospitals and are involved in the clinical teaching and training.
