 Ras Al Khaimah, Feb 4: The 19th annual camel racing festival in Ras Al Khaimah had an exciting finish today as Crown Princes, sheikhs and other dignitaries joined hundreds of camel race enthusiasts from across UAE to watch the final day races.
The seven- day race, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, is one of the biggest camel race events in the country with this year’s edition attracting more than 4500 pure- bred Arabian camels from across GCC.
The galaxy of leaders who were present to witness the final day race included HH Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, HH Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras al Khaimah, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, HH Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman and HH Sheikh Rashid bin Saud bin Rashid Al Mu'alla, Crown Prince of Umm Al Quwain
The races were held in six rounds amidst a festive atmosphere replete with traditional dance and music. The spectators cheered and rooted for their favorites as the camels galloped to the finished line flanked by scores of four-wheel drives carrying men who controlled the robot jockeys fixed on the back of the camels using remote control.
Camel `Baraka’ owned by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, won the President's Cup in the category of camels owned by sheikhs while the camel `Tabbiyah’ owned by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, won the cup of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in the same category. The cup of His Highness Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi was won by the camel `Al Shehniya’ owned by Prince Turkey Mohammed Al Saud from Saudi Arabia
The President’s Cup for the general public category was won by the camel `Mizna’ ,owned by Mussabah Rashid Al Fattan while the camel `Lefhah’ owned by Mohammed bin Jasim Al Mazroie won the cup of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in the same category. The cup of His Highness Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi in the general public category was won by the camel `Neyyassa’, owned by Salim bin Sultan bin Jerrah
Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, hosted a luncheon in honour of the guests at Al Suwan.
