The water recycling plant incorporates state- of- the- art environment friendly recycling technology and has been set up by the Government of Ras Al Khaimah represented by the Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA), Al Ghurair and Hitachi Plant Technologies, Japan.
The project was funded by the Japanese Government Research and Development Organisation NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation) as a research project for Wastewater Recycling and Treatment in the Emirate.
The project is aimed to design, build, operate and maintain for three years a 2000 cubic metre per day Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) along with 1000 cubic metre per day Reverse Osmosis (RO) Wastewater Recycling and Treatment Plant to recycle waste water for industrial usage as an alternative to scarce potable water in the Al Ghail Industrial Park which is under the RAKIA.
Tadahisa Okabe, Director General, Environment Technology Development Department, NEDO, said, “ The project at Al Ghail Industrial Park is NEDO’s first demonstration project in the UAE using Japan’s advanced water treatment technology. The systems installed under this project are expected to reduce energy requirement for water treatment by more than 30 percent while providing secure water supply.”
Manabu Shimokawa, Vice President and Executive Officer, Hitachi Plant Technologies, said, “Designed to achieve the stringent quality standards laid down internationally for unrestricted public access irrigation, the Wastewater Recycling and Treatment process will consistently produce a treated effluent suitable for industrial and irrigation purposes.”
Essa Al Ghurair. Vice Chairman, Al Ghurair said, “The main objective of the project is to provide the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah with the best sustainable, environmental and economical Wastewater Recycling and Treatment solution.”
The project aims to establish a business model in the term of an experimental study and on successful completion, the business of utilizing treated water for industries, irrigation, top up water for water elements amongst other uses will be started.
Takeshi Yoshida, Chief Representative of NEDO, said that an investment of USD 4.5 million has been made for the construction of the plant and a funding of USD 1 million will be made available annually during the three year period for plant operations.
H.E. Kenji Saito, Acting Japanese Consul General in Dubai, Takeshi Shinoda, Secretary General, Global Water Recycling and Reuse Solution Technology Research Association, Japan, heads of RAK government departments and several dignitaries were present on the occasion.
